Knowing how terribly sad you would be if I really did make it that short and simple, I had spent the last whole month ('great exagerration?' - you decide for yourself) pondering over what I should write. And honestly speaking, I am still sitting here clueless. Can't I copy and paste what you posted for me on my birthday? It speaks my mind actually. (My Birthday Post from Jasper)

Anyway, I guess it'd be best for me to speak the voices of my heart.

"On this very special day, recalling you saying that we had never celebrated our birthdays together, I just wish I could be with you in Tasmania right now celebrating. How I wish I am there to see your smiles, hear your laughters, feel your happiness... to pass you your present instead of having to post one, etc etc... Though I am no longer THAT far from you being back home now, I am still only able to send you my wishes through the web and phone calls. So, with all my heart, I wish you a very very very happy birthday and i wish you all the very best. We will make up for the birthday celebrations one by one when we do eventually meet each other again.. there must be well over 10 by now? haha. =)"

I am so sorry that I have run dried with ideas over what I should write. So, I decided to spend the remaining time telling the world that today is Jasper Leong's (One of the world's most important man) 21st Birthday. I hope you appreciate the 'great lengths' I went into to make the following dedications possible. Okay? hehe. And ENJOY!!!

What you said about how time flies is soo true. In less than two weeks, I'll be back in Malaysia! Woohoo! Can't wait till we meet up again. Unlike you (hehe), your present is on its way to you!!! I really hope you like it. AND, we still have to go out for belated celebrations of our birthdays when I'm back. Anyway, just gonna keep this a short post, notice how I have not blogged since Wynne's birthday (it was totally INTENTIONAL). Seriously though, I have been busy with exams and so forth.

Design - Build - Test - Compete

This was the flyer that was being passed around in the first week of Uni. A design challenge organized by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in association with the University of Bolton. The competition required teams to design and build an energy absorbing structure which was to protect a simulated pedestrian against impact from a simulated vehicle. The way the test was carried out is shown in the following diagram. Simplistically, the winning design is the one that would allow the most weight to be lifted to the maximum height and released without the glass slide breaking. If a tie was to occur, then the lightest structure would win.
The reception from the our school's first year Engineering students was pretty good. If i am not mistaken, 6 teams from our university enrolled for it. Since the rules states that each university is only allowed 2 representing teams, an 'internal' competition was first carried out to select the two best teams that would represent the University of Manchester in the finals which was held at the University of Bolton. I am really fortunate to be one of them. The other member of my team was Johannes, from Germany. It was great fun working with him on this project. We managed to learn a lot from each other. After lots of time and effort carrying out researches and building several prototypes we came out with the following design.
We also had to come up with a poster that publicise's the team's work. I can still remember getting to the Uni at 2am in the morning to meet up with Johannes to finish off our poster on the day of the finals.

On the day itself the challenge comprised of 3 parts. First, to compete against other teams, using standardised test methods and equipment to demonstrate the performances of the structure. Second, to see which team came up with the best poster and thirdly, a short presentation describing the work. There were altogether 10 teams from 5 different Universities during the finals. After a long and tiring day full of rounds after rounds of tests, presentations and talks, the results was announced. The Champions and 1st Runner up when to Manchester Metropolitan University (our neighbouring University). Johannes and I managed a third place whereas the other team from our University won the Best poster prize. We are pretty satisfied with the result eventhough our testings suggested we could do much better.

Through my participation in this activity, I gained valuable exposure and learnt many important lessons, and most of all I had had a whale of a time. The following are pictures taken on the day of the finals at the University of Bolton.

There are loads and loads of happenings and experiences from last year and the beginning of this year that I have yet to blog about, but seemed to not have the time - being occupied with coursework and sometimes just being plain lazy. Never realized it was this hard to keep an up-to-date blog. I will try to get them posted within this week or two (as easter holiday's start next week) and hopefully catch-up with time so that I can write as events happen.

Welcome! Finally a post in an URL thats about to extinct.

I hope with this simple blog, I can share with you (family and friends) the experiences I'm experiencing here, miles away from you all. Considering the fact that I have never written any form of diary in my life, and that I have a busy schedule in University, there's no guarantee that it'll be updated on a regular basis. Then again, I will try my very best. So, bookmark my page and pop over to check for new posts now and again.

I am going to finish this post with pictures of my 'home' over here in Manchester. I am staying at Dalton Ellis Hall - A University Hall of Residence in Victoria Park campus and am paying 110pounds per week for a single room with washbasin.
